I’ve been on a serious mission to reset my dopamine menu and I’ve finally made it to the part of the program that I’ve been trying to get to for months. The part that neuroscientist TJ Power is talking about in the video clip where I don’t immediately look at my phone when my eyes open up in the morning. It’s seemingly taken forever to get here but I’m gagged at the results. The first day I did it I was able to go 3 hours without looking at anything other than my email and I couldn’t believe how much I got done. I had so much more energy to get what I needed done and it seemed like the natural dopamine input from checking things off my to do list made me do more things.
I’ve known for quite sometime how scrolling first thing in the am robs you of your day, but just like the drug that scrolling and social media is, I couldn’t break free from it. But since I’ve been more intentional about my input I can recognize subtle changes that have only been beneficial. It feels good not to have my phone high jack my day. I procrastinate less and feel totally more accomplished. Real dopamine sources, not a false feeling of pleasure and a desire to want to engage in the posts, likes, shares and notifications that have had us all in a chokehold for so long.
I’m taking baby steps towards being able to unglue my phone from my hand, regain my focus and attention and it’s been rewarding.
Now only if I can stop snacking throughout the day
